Mobile family visits highest, lowest points in US

MOBILE, Alabama — The touring and hiking White family of Mobile has a way of outdoing their previous travel adventures over the last 12 years, mostly in national parks across America.
In a space of 24 hours in early August, they went from the highest point of the lower 48 states, 14,494 feet above sea level, to the lowest, 282 feet below sea level.
Their family odyssey began with a trip to Washington, D.C., in 2000, said Hugh White, a Mobile banker, who drove there with his wife, Lisa, a kindergarten teacher at Mobile Christian School, and their young sons, Lawson and Sam.
Since then, the family has traveled to about 25 national parks in the U.S., including Yosemite, Mount Rainier, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Acadia and one in the Virgin Islands. They have also visited three parks in Canada: Banff, Yoho and Jasper.
“About seven years ago, we realized that getting out of the vehicle and hiking into nature was even more exhilarating than seeing the parks mostly from the car,” said White. One result was two ascents of Half Dome, the iconic granite monolith in Yosemite, with a different son each time.
