Alaska cell phone wars heat up -- and customers benefit

Telecommunications company AT&T announced Thursday that it was taking the competition up a notch in the battle for wireless supremacy in Alaska, beating out local companies and shoring up its mobile service before national competitor Verizon arrives on the scene sometime next year.

The company said that it had rolled out Long Term Evolution (LTE) service -- a high-speed method of transferring data to mobile phones and other devices -- in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. It marks the first arrival of LTE service in the state, beating local competitors GCI and Alaska Communications Systems, the latter of which has been planning an LTE network of its own for some time.

Before AT&T’s introduction of the service, it shared the title for fastest mobile network in the state with GCI, which uses a system known as a High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) plus network. HSPA plus and LTE are both frequently referred to as “4G” networks when it comes to selling phones and cell phone plans, though LTE has the real edge when it comes to download speed, and is usually considered the truer “4G” network .
