Africa's Crackdown On Fake Mobile Phones

Mobile phone ownership has surged in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), from just under 35mn subscribers in 2003 to around 467mn at the end of 2011 – a 13-fold increase over the eight-year period.

However, this rapid growth has attracted dealers in counterfeit handsets as well as genuine vendors. In fact, it is estimated that counterfeit phones account for 10-30% of total handsets sold in most SSA countries, and up to 60% in extreme cases. This means that there could be up to 141mn fake mobile phones in the region. The most affected brands are Nokia, Samsung, Huawei, and RIM (the maker of the BlackBerry).

Consequently, some African governments, notably Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zambia, are a taking a stand against counterfeit phones.

There are several reasons for the crackdown:
