High-end headphones keep up growth

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Continued strong growth of portable tech products such as smartphones and tablets are fueling the market for high-end headphones heading into the holiday shopping season.

While lower-price items such as earbuds still command the lion’s share of the overall headphone market, sales at the high end — where prices exceed $100 and often reach $300 or higher — jumped 84% in the 12-month period ended Sept. 31 from the same period a year before, according to data from NPD.

“There is definitely sustained interest in that high end,” said NPD analyst Ben Arnold. “As more brands target that end, there are more to choose from.” Slide Show: These are the hottest high-end headphones for the holiday gift givers.

A partnership between rapper/composer Dr. Dre and record producer Jimmy Iovine resulted in a line of iconic, colorful headphones that sold for $300 and quickly helped to double the size if the premium segment, according to NPD data.

For years, the quality of the listening experience hadn't mattered to many people, and most preferred to listen to music on whatever earbuds or headphones happened to be around. Impressive sound was nice, but it was hardly a necessity. And then Beats

The next problem: are headphones too isolating?
However, as modern offices (and budgets) do not allow for individual offices apart from top management, the only way to keep concentration is by either using earbuds (I personnally recommend the brand 'ear' in soft mousse), og by listening to music
