Venice Skateboarder Hires Trayvon Martin Attorney in Racial Profiling Case
Weekley was "arrested and booked for obstructing/resisting a police officer with force," LAPD spokesman Richard French told City News Service. Officers later discovered that Weekley had three outstanding warrants, all of which were related to curfew violations.
The suspect/victim was released from jail Monday and told reporters he suffered a broken nose, fractured cheekbone and concussion in the arrest. Though the arresting officers maintain Weekley resisted arrest and reached out and touched an officer's gun belt, the skateboarder simply said, "It's not true." Witnesses defended Weekley's claims.
Weekley has hired Benjamin Crump, the prominent attorney also representing Trayvon Martin. Crump questioned the officers' motivations during Tuesday's news conference at Westminster Baptist Church in Venice: "Was he stopped because he was on the wrong side of the road, or was he attacked because he was the wrong color?"
The 20-year-old alleges that he was racially profiled, and members of the outraged community will rally in support Wednesday at 4pm near the site of the incident at 610 6th Avenue.
