Nvidia launches Tegra 3 quad-core processor for mobile phones and tablets

With the covers coming off the Asus EEE Pad Transformer Prime, it’s only natural that everyone wants to know more about the world’s first quad-core processor it packs. Meet the Nvidia Tegra 3!
Earlier code-named the Kal-El, the quad-core mobile chipset is based on ARM technology and is claimed to be five times faster than the Tegra 2. The upgrades include smoother webpage scrolling (without visible clipping), up to two times faster flash performance with higher frame rates and smoother animation; smoother steaming video performance; up to three times faster HTML 5 and Web GL performance; faster photo editing and video encoding and smoother frame rates and more particle and shader effects in games.
But the coolest bit about the new Nvidia Tegra 3 is undoubtedly the ‘Ninja Core’. The chipset includes a stealthy fifth core that kicks in for low-powered tasks, making sure your battery usage is kept to a minimal. So basically, when you are doing a less resource-intensive task – say your phone is on standby, you’re listening to music or you’re looking at a static Web page – the quad-core processors shut down and only the Ninja Core fifth processor runs along at a lower clock speed, making your battery life a whole lot better.
