Last week, a senior RF engineer at T-Mobile took to Reddit and let the community ask him anything (AMA or “ask me anything”). The community responded with questions about the modernization project and various other tidbits about T-Mobile’s upgrade.
While ExtremeTech has already covered much of what was mentioned, a thoughtful questioner asked how much of the carrier’s 2G traffic was from iPhone users. The engineer replied that “99.9% of their traffic is 2G/EDGE only right now” and that everything else dwarfs the iPhone 2G load. As a result, a major focus of the network modernization is to get those users to run over the more efficient 3G network with UMTS deployment on the 1.9GHz PCS band. If T-Mobile does not, it could suffer severe network overload when 2G capacity is reduced in order to make room for LTE in 2013 .
T-Mobile, which still does not offer Apple’s handsets to its subscribers, has repeatedly stated that there are about one million iPhone users on its network. With unlocked iPhones and authorized unlocks becoming possible in the US, it is quite likely that the number is much higher than that. These users are forced to use the 2G GSM network in order to have T-Mobile service, as the iPhone is not capable of HSPA+ over the AWS band. Because of this restriction, all iPhones on T-Mobile’s network run on 2G only, and can only get up to EDGE speeds for data.
